you know i was thinking some part 15’ers have a name like world-round radio, the crow you name it, i was thinking a name for KDSX since my format is a Modern AC Format (also known as progressive pop/rock) so i thought FM 92 KDSX “The Wave” and that’s the only thing that came to me, so tell me what you think.
Part 15 Community Radio
Texoma’s Progressive Pop Rock Station, FM 92 KDSX The Wave.

Nicking Names
ABMedia1 I am here and very interested in your question….
Finding a “nickname”for KDSX.
Well, “The Wave” is a nick name. Let’s not be hasty. What do people think about when they hear “The Wave”? I am not sure. Maybe the “ocean”.
So, my thought is, give it an extended period of time before you make a final decision. Perhaps a better nick name will happen.
I, just me, just one guy, am thinking about a slogan for your station.
Here at Part15.us you have many friends who also will think of nick names for you.
Let them think. Maybe you will be nick named beyond your wildest dreams.

The Wave
The Wave also infers either an Oldies or AC type station.
Since your a rocker of sorts, why not call it 92.3 The Buzz or The Buzzard, Or Since your In Sherman, what about just calling it,
92.3 KDSX Texoma’s Best Rock
RichPowers says
When you said your format was
When you said your format was “Modern AC”, -I couldn’t help but to think “alternating current”.. but have no idea how that might be used with any eloquence.
Out of curiosity, a google search brought me to Wikipedia, and there was a paragraph that caught my eye which began as saying;
“A slightly hotter variation of the urban AC is the rhythmic adult contemporary format, often branded as “MOViN”…
– which I think sounds pretty cool, however it goes on to say:
“..This focuses on uptempo hits such as disco, early hip-hop and R&B, and dance music, and it caters to African-American, Hispanic and white audiences. Noteworthy examples of Rhythmic AC stations include WKTU in New York, WISX in Philadelphia, and KQMV in Seattle (which pioneered the MOViN format)…
But by that definition it may (or not) be an unsuitable indication of your station.
I don’t know how predominate the phrase “The Wave” is with radio stations, but one of the major Savannah FM stations has always carried the phrase “The Wave” as it’s logo, so that makes me partial.
In conclusion, I really don’t have a good suggestion to offer, but agree with Carl to give it some time and mull over a few ideas before you make a quick decision.
Something will come to you!

Not From Sherman
Not From Sherman, but from the Area.
KDSX was on 950 AM. KKLF on 1700 replaced KDSX.
If I remember right KDSX was News Radio 95 for quite some time with Top 40 overnights.
Carl Blare says
Language of Symbols
As a one-man think tank I am going to ponder the whole question of naming radio stations that already have names.
KDSX is the name of the station.
FM 92 identifies the band and dial location.
“The Wave” or other nickname identifies the “style” or “image” of the format. In radio we have long wave, medium wave, short wave on up. The oceans covering 2/3 of the world have strong powerful waves. A nice hairstyle is sometimes wavy. We wave our hands in friendly greeting. Audio consists of sound waves.
“The Crow” used a bird image, the crow being an intelligent and crafty bird with a bold caw sound. The Cardinals baseball team chose a very feminine, dainty song-bird for their image (??)
There is another thought just coming to me…. perhaps a radio station nickname could reflect the audience profile you most want to attract… “The Smart One”, “Personality Radio”, “Celebrity 92”, “The Mature Sound”….
Identity with your city is another way to go. There was a 50kW station here once called “The Voice of St. Louis”. You would be “The Voice of Sherman”.
The men with pepper spray are coming, I have to leave.
RichPowers says
Or, as was described in
Or, as was described in another thread.. identify with the signal type(Part 15), thus; Sufferance Radio!
But you know, that could be taken as kind of depressing… meaning you’d have to switch your format to the Blues.
Carl Blare says
Format Floormat
A lady who called the FM station where I worked wanted me to play a record that wasn’t on our official playlist, and I tried to explain to her that I could not break the rules by playing her request.
She answered, “I know all about station floormats.”
I thought maybe I heard wrong, or perhaps she was kidding, so I asked her to repeat. She distinctly used the word “floormats.”
An all blues floormat might be good, I’m not sure how long a person could withstand only blues. But that brings up a bigger question: can listeners tolerate any type of music beyond a certain length of time. Has anybody ever done research on that?
For example, I like jazz some of the time, but definitely not all the time.
Some of the popular music of the past was interesting at the time, but now I wonder if its a good idea to dredge up old memories and past associations, except once in awhile.
I am not convinced that full-time formats are good for mental health.
I always thought the elevator music formats of the past were fantastically boring, like being sent to music hell. There’s a restaurant here that plays the old-style elevator music, and it spoils the taste of the food.
The station slogan might make people remember the station, but it might also remind them that they don’t like the format.
There’s a station here called “The River,” but it never plays river music. Whatever it is they do play, I don’t enjoy. To me “The River” means “tune out.”

And of course ‘rock’ is always associated with music and a rock that radiates hot rock music is one great rock!

Slogans Again
Tonight I thought of a slogan that fits part 15 radio…
“The Boomerang”
The idea is that even if your signal doesn’t go far enough to reach other listeners, it swerves around to your radio and comes back.
Then I went through a list of Chicago FM stations and found:
WPWX “Power 92”
WVIX “Maxima 103.1”
WLIT “My FM”
WJKL “K-Love”
WERV “The River”
WBBM “B-96”
WSSR “The Star”
WDRV “The Drive”
WLUP “The Loop”
Hey, how about KDX “The Slogan”
mram1500 says
Radio Hall of Fame…
How sad as I read over all the thought that went into creating a station to be proud of. To let another destroy that which brought such joy and pride.

So THIS is Christmas…

Star Lite – Star Bright – Bring This Star Back From Strife…
So I asked Andrew if he would consider continuing to produce his programs which he could share with his ALPB members.
He obviously enjoyed that aspect of his Part 15 operation. If he has been badgered to the point of going off the air due to some ignorant, self righteous individuals, why not? His audience could expand dramatically.
I suppose he has his reasons…
