It appears to be a fairly simple and straightforward way of building a modulation monitor for FM inexpensively.

My other question would be if some sort of a similar principle (realizing that AM decoding doesn't work the same as FM) could be used to build an AM modulation monitor as well?

used to make a compact stereo that had a digital built in modulation moniter on it's receiver. My old Pioneer sx600? has a signal strenth moniter. I prefer the modulation moniter.
