Since most hobbyists are on AM you want a receiver that will make AM sound as good as it can and the miserable radios around now don't do that except a couple. For those that don't want to spend hundreds $$$ on ebay or Etsy for Sonys and Panasonics in decent condition made in the 70s and 80s like the RF 2200 for example among some others, there are a few made today that will make your station sound as good as AM is capable of sounding.
For reception, audio quality, with bandwidth selection in a convenient size for portability the Sangean MMR-99 is excellent. First choice.
The CCrane EP pro is like the modern day GE super radio made for AM performance along with the CC 2E. I'd pick the EP pro for the bandwidth feature. Yes AM can sound good but unfortunately only selected receivers bring out the best in AM audio quality. The good news is they are available, past or present.

I like the GE super radio. There are 3 different versions, Even Radio Shack had A branded version of GE super radio 3. They all have good audio quality. If Your station is in the expended AM band The Original GE super radio won't cover that portion. You'll need version 2 or 3. Find them on Ebay around $50 give or take. But nothing will compare to a air Modulation monitor. But that's out the reach of most part 15 operators...
