I've got the new Talking Sign up and running in a temporary install. I still have to figure out how to get out past the Faraday cage that they call my apartment building.
In the meantime, I've put an AM Broadcast Band profile up on OpenWebRX+, which centers on AM1650, the frequency I've chosen for now. I'm going to take it to 1610 or a bit lower so that all my radios can receive it.
There are still a few glitches - there's a lot of noise, particularly in the quiet spots, that isn't there on the over-the-air broadcast. I've gotten rid of some of it (it was a lot worse at first), but not all. It's something in the SDR, but I'm leaving it for another day.
I also don't have the audio levels right yet. Close, not there yet.
But overall, the Talking Sign actually sounds pretty good, even though it's not designed for music broadcasts. The low frequency response is good and even the mids and highs are OK. Ironically, the voiceovers don't sound quite right (even though it was designed for voice), and will have to do something about that.
I should also mention that I haven't yet touched the modulation control on the transmitter. It's set the way it came from the maker.
I was able to reduce the noise level significantly by moving the SDR antenna. It appears that it was picking up noise from either a monitor, or a network switch. I still don't have it in the optimum location, but it's better.
