Hi Everyone, just a quick note to let you know that the server suffered a huge glitch last night – still trying to get a straight answer on exactly what the cause was – and we were down for about 3 hours. Not only that, some data was corrupted and I had to roll back to June 1 at 6pm so we lost an entire days worth of posts/comments.
First my apologies to anyone that was trying to login and to those whose posts are now gone – the host is a good web host and is paid a lot to do a better job than this so I will be looking into it in great detail.
Second, let me know if you notice anything else that is not quite right so I can make sure everything is working properly now.
regards,
Jon Paul

Crystal Sets
You could call Part 15 “minimalist radio,”
because you are trying to take a little
bit of RF – and you are trying to get it
to go somewhere.
Years ago, I had thought about that – and because
of THIS SITE, I was able to build a pretty good
Part 15 AM transmitting installation.
The other thing I have always
wanted to try was to make a very
sensitive “crystal radio.” For
those who haven’t heard this name –
it is just a radio that is powered by
the radio energy of the station you
are tuned to. And usually that energy
is not much. Most crystal sets use headphones.
If you are very close to a station, you
can make a crystal radio with a speaker – I
have seen some of these on internet videos.
So anyway – after that lengthy introduction –
what I am really asking is:
Has anyone on this board experimented with
crystal radios – either recently – or years ago?
Any recollection or tidbit is fine with me.
Best Wishes,

Memory Hole
I remember the crystal and a little metal “holder” that the round crystal element fit into, and the “whisker” that poked around on the crystal and hearing about two local stations, one of which had the transmitter two blocks away.
This was in the early 1950s. I guess I listened on a headset. I gave up on it pretty quickly because there were a few good radios in the house.
Where did it come from? I guess maybe from one of the local stores we had including Walter-Ashe Radio Store, Layfayette Radio Store and Allied Radio Store.
I went into those stores thinking “There’s something in here I need, if I could just figure out what.”
