Surprising how well that worked.

It would be good if those crystal oscillator packages were available for a wider range of frequencies in the AM BC band. Every 10KHz channel between 1500 and 1700KHz would be great!

Maybe there is a way of building a frequency shifting circuit to come up with other frequencies (???)

I don't think that much of the internal circuitry on those crystal oscillator packages is available at the pins. Even if it was, the most you'd be able to pull the frequency of one of those crystals is a KHz or so - not even enough to get it to the next adjacent channel.

If you want true frequency agility, you can use a PLL frequency synthesizer circuit, as used in the AMT3000 or the Spitfire. There is a schematic for one here. Alternatively, you could you use a clock generator IC, such as the Si5351. All these alternatives introduce more circuit complexity. If you want circuit simplicity, best start collecting any crystals you can find for the AM BC band, or put up with the relative instability of a free-running LC oscillator circuit.
