hello I need some advice I am trying to find a position on the am dial and I think i found one i want to use but I need some advice on whether or not my station would cause any interference with the adjacent stations ok 1610 is the one i want to use. I listened to it and it is empty during the daytime and during the night. I went to http://www.radio-locator.com and did a search for 1610 and the only one i found was 1 station and it was in canada and it is a long way away from me. I am in kansas and its in toronto, canada. i did however find a station on 1600 that is 30 miles north of me and here is the info on it:

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

If someone near your station is listening to the 1600 station, you will interfere. A 530 watter 30 miles away could very well have listeners in your area. Keep in mind that the sidebands on AM extend up and down from the carrier by 5 to 10 kHz. and listeners' radios may not have the selectivity to keep you two apart. A part15 transmitter can produce even wider bandwidth unless the audio is carefully filtered. You on 1610 will share sideband space with 1600 and no AM receiver can reject your signal if your sidband overlaps that of another signal.

I listen to a 5kW station 70 miles away on 1290 and get interference from a 250 W station 20 miles away on 1270. I am using a high quality receiver and I know the problem is with the 1270 station. I called them and told them their bandwidth was splattering up and down 30 kHz. and that they were causing interference. The station op told me that the engineer was making adjustments and they knew they had a problem. (They eventually fixed it.). Point is that people listen to distant stations and if you do interfere, someone will likely look into it.

I decided not to use the 1600-1700 freqs. because there are several TIS stations within 20 miles of here, either operating or licensed for operation. There is no safe space here for operating in this band. You might want to do a search on the TIS licenses near you. Though the band is quiet now, there may be a TIS poised to begin operation.
I can hear the TIS in my city 15 miles away with a listenable signal, so they could cause you interference at that distance.

I don't know if I answered your question but I hope I gave you some useful things to consider.

Neil
