Hi again...Here in the great North West, we've had a very wet and warm (for these lattitudes) winter. The ground is soggy, ripe for planting an artificial ground system. As some here may remember, I was on a boat and had the ocean for ground and counterpoise...which is as good as it ever gets. On some days, I could get the ol' Talking House 5 listenable to nearly 3 miles depending on interference.

Now I'm basically on a rock. It's above the level of most of the town, but that hasn't helped that much. And there is, of course, much more interference especially on AM from exponental increases in the plethora of RF devices.

IMO a great, not just good, ground induction system is nothing less than neccessary now for Part 15'ers. My plan? Well, here are a couple ideas:

1) 60 ground radials, 30 @ 10' bonded to several ground rods, plus 30 more @ 20' as counterpoise, along with a spread of chicken wire mashed into the ground all over my yard.

2) Or, 4' wide chicken wire spread out 10' or so in, say, 4 directions at the antenna base with 60 @ 20' radials, all of it bonded to ground rods.

So, which one of these 2 ideas would be better?

Note: OTOH, the good money is on TV channel 6 to increase the FM band. Bandwidth is 6 mHz which should allow a bunch more channels (25 so says my friend who owns a few commercial stations in Michigan). I'm wondering how much this might increase the opportunities for LPFM Community radio....or a whole lot more Part 15 activity with increased ERP....hmmmm...

Your two plans seem similar enough to each other that I cannot expect much of a difference.

Both of your plans include numerous ground rods, and other threads on this subject have said that only the ground plane at the surface of the earth makes any difference... they say that adding ground rods adds nothing to performance. It said a ground rod adds lightning protection but no other benefit.

I will be doing an outdoor ground system this year also. My plan comes from this post by PhilB:

I followed Carl's link and took a few minutes to read the entire thread.  All I can say is that I'm glad that several of the more volatile posters are no longer with us here.
