What type audio wire is recommended on a run of around 50 feet? Will plain old speaker wire do the trick?

Use shielded wire. You can get two-pair shielded wire at Home Depot. Look for home security cabling in the electrical section (it'll be grey wire with four insulated wires, a braided wire and a blue foil wrap).
