The penny, that's been consistently minted since 1793, a part of American culture for over 230 years, and has been costing 4 cents each to make, as of today, Wednesday, November 12, 2025 has minted it's final run.
“God bless America, and we’re going to save the taxpayers $56 million,” Treasurer Brandon Beach said at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia before hitting a button to strike the final penny. " ... .. The last U.S. coin to be discontinued was the half-cent in 1857, Beach said."
So that means if you pay cash at a store the final price will be rounded off to the nearest nickel or 5 cents. That's already done here.
@mark They'll remain in circulation, they'll continue to be used, I don't think there's a cut off date or anything, but there will be no more pressing. I guess at some point they'll faze them completely out of use but that's probably going to take about a decade before it happens.
That is if we don't go to digital money first.
Murry Rothbard is my homeboy (as we would have said in the hood).
The penny is worthless because of the Banksters. Peoples eyes glaze over quickly if you talk about how money in fractional reserve is made. I shall miss the penny.
