I only noticed yesterday a few hours just before it sold, the description simply said "Great unit, works perfectly." The bidding had started at $120, and 5 bidders and 15 bids later it sold for $255

FMR Audio RNC1773 Really Nice Compressor Stereo Rackmount Compressor Limiter

https://www.ebay.com/itm/146937095051

You know I probably would of bid on that had I not just purchased the Culbert. I never heard of them but I'm real curious after seeing there are others of the exact same model on eBay with considerably higher price tags:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/167918832941 $400

https://www.ebay.com/p/2256115051 Looks brand new, original packaging for $499

https://www.ebay.com/p/2256115051 $1,008.16+ $158.00 shipping

I also searched the completed auctions

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=fmr+compressor&LH_PrefLoc=2&LH_Complete=1

And see that they are listed rather frequently, there were a lot of them but of the dozen or so that actually sold (used) went sold prices ranged from about $175  to about $350.

Seems to be a really popular processor, anyone ever heard of them

They want too much money for those. Those sellers are ripping you off and they are used also.
Here's the retail price at Long and Mcquade music stores in Canada new $289.00. That's $289 Canadian dollars. 30% less in USD.

Look closer, those in Canada are used too. As for the ones on eBay, about 30 have sold this year (link above), the cheapest went for $175, the highest at $599, but the majority went for around $250, all different sellers, al used-- it's obviously a very popular processor.

Don't know when they came out, there's a whole slew of videos reviews on YouTube about it. I never heard of them

They came out 18 years ago. Lol.. I just caught that, the RNC 1773 model — the RNC actually stands for "Really Nice Compressor" ..

" one of the best sounding compressors for under $2000"

They sound interesting, but it doesn't appear they have individual frequency compressions like the Schlockwood and the Culbert, though does have the balanced TRS connections like most pro gear. They apparently cost something over $1,000 when they came out, They don't make them s model anymore, it's been succeeded by their RNC500 series .

The RNC line are software based processors, heavy construction and generally not cheap, but considered as budget pro gear.

I didn't really want to know, I was wondering if I would have been better off buying one of these instead of the Culbert had I known. But really it appears the Culbert was the better choice after all.

Maybe.

@richpowers What I showed you was a new price. Click on the item. New in stock $289.00. 4 stores have new stock. https://www.long-mcquade.com/5840/Pro-Audio-Recording/Signal-Processors/FMR-Audio/Really-Nice-Compressor.htm
Used and demo available. FMR ceased production this year but some still around. Doesn't matter, they sold new for $289, in the USA for $199 and the sellers are a rip off with a used one at double or triple the cost of a new one.
But there is another brand I can't think of that is similar, just like that one.
But another company according to FMR is going to continue to make them.

@richpowers I don't think the FMR has 3 band compression. You are right, The FMR compresses the whole spectrum at once, not in separate bands like the Schlockwood or Sean Cuthbert.
So you will get drop outs when the bass needs compression causing that pumping effect.

It may be a play on words "New in Stock" does not equate with "New", also consider the one demo unit they sell for $283 and the used units are the same price as the "New In Stock" ones at their other locations. I don't know how much they sold for originally (18 years ago) but they'had been routed as "one of the best sounding compressors for under $2000", So from that I deduced that they had cost something over $1,000 and under $2,000, but like I said the RNC1773 had been been succeeded by their RNC500 series years ago. But they were considered and built to pro gear standards but at a budget price point (under $2,000) due to its less expensive software based circuitry as opposed to solid state. That's what I see from a few searches.

It's clear that long-mcquade.com picked up some old stock FMR equipment via a surplus auction from their closing - just like the eBay sellers probably did, and distributed them to all their locations, thus New in Stock.

I don't think the eBay sellers are ripping anyone off, I hadn't looked close enough but got the impression they were all used, maybe some were ,New Old Stock.. I don't know, but their quality built units and not plastic cases
