With remote controlled drones playing an increasing role in broadcast uses the FCC plans to establish rules for frequency use in 5GHz spectrum
KDX has given thought to having a camera drone and I'm happy to share what we think:
Our campus is friendly to birds and we enjoy watching them at the feeder but pesky squirrels always crowd in and we believe it could be amusing to dive at them with our drone to keep them away at least while we are watching. It would be a humane animal management air force.
We could also fly it to the top of our ten-foot tower and inspect whatever we mount up there. We could stick a wren house on there but wouldn't want to intimidate the inhabitants.
A roof inspection of the Internet Building might be a delicate matter because there are neighbors windows on two sides and if they looked out and saw a drone they'd get the wrong idea.
We could sail the drone out to look at license plates of suspicious vehicles parked on the public street. That happens at least twice a year.
Otherwise there are lots of overhead wires that could cause drone mishaps and a few trees. If the drone inadvertently crossed into a neighbors yard and crashed it would be awkward to knock on their door to retrieve it.
And if the drone were outfitted with an AM receiver and FM transmitter we could fly out of sight to track our AM transmitter's range, in lieu of using a car, but we might never see the drone again and never really know what happened to it.
