The last eBay auction for the station closed with no bids on November 12th. I looked at both resortradio.org and wsjl.com. Both sites have changed somewhat, but I don't think the general format of either site is that different. In addition, there is a notice on resortradio.org that the site was updated on November 25th.

I was just wondering if Part 15 stations have to pay royalty fees to broadcast music? I use live365 to broadcast my station online and for now i just have a fm transmitter that only broadcast a few hundred feet. I am planning on getting an am transmitter so i can broadcast futher but I was curious about the laws on royalties.
Thanks!

IANAL, however, to date, no one has been successful in getting BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, or anyone to give us a rate sheet. Basically, we're not big enough to pay. One person got "we don't have provisions for part 15, so just go ahead until we do."
That's not to say that tomorrow, some exec at BMI won't decide to collect from us all ...

Can anyone tell me if there are any decent AM transmitters out there between 50- 75 bucks?
Thanks,
Shane

I believe Ramsey Electronics has one at that price, but I wouldn't consider it for serious work. Too many people seem to have problems with it.
Although there is the near-$1000 Rangemaster, which has an FCC certificate, there is the inexpensive Gizmo and its cousin in a complete system, the Metzo.
But I recommend the SSTRAN AMT3000, which has an internal compressor/limiter, too, needed for good sound. It's less than $100. An external compressor/limiter will cost over $100 alone.
Best wishes,

WCRV is BACK... on the air! On a very limited basis now.
Basically, I've moved the antenna indoors once again. Some of you may remember I did this before with limited success.

We're cleaning up and getting ready for more great contributions, so we've moved our earlier stories to our searchable Stories Archive for safe keeping and future reference. Some of this material can also now be found in our Library Section. Enjoy!

Testing the antenna inside of a trailer is an experience! I have found little tricks that really make the signal smoke. But inside a metal trailer, there is little signal outside of it.

While you probably won't set any distance records, this handy tuned short wire antenna might be just the thing for applications where a visible antenna just isn't possible. Read more in our Review Section

●Should I go AM or FM?
AM: Offers (in some cases) a range of up to 3 miles! Some installations get 1/2 mile, some can be heard clearly 10 miles away (rare..VERY rare). Using the right processing equipment, or a computer for processing, you can even get very good sound quality... ..Most of the P15'ers use AM, simply for the range.
●What kind of range can you get from a 100 milliwatt AM transmitter?
There are no simple answers to questions about range. A signal strength that produces good listening in a quiet rural area may be useless in a static-filled industrial city.
Range depends on the receiver's sensitivity and on the quietness of your frequency and the frequencies nextdoor to it. In tech lingo, under the best conditions with the best available transmitter you might achieve a field strength of 1 mV/m at a radius of 1/4 mile.
Ionospheric Messenger describes what can be gotten from a typical installation of the ready-to-use (manufactured) Part 15 transmitters that are on the market:
"With a good car radio, you need to be within 100 to 200 yards of the transmitter to hear it clearly. The signal gradually disappears into the background noise as you drive farther away, becoming barely readable at 1/2 mile. Well-equipped radio hobbyists can hear it farther away.".. ..
●Should I buy a manufactured transmitter, build a kit, or build from scratch?
Building a transmitter circuit from scratch is like building a car from scratch... ..The FCC-certified manufactured transmitters cost $500 to $1500 or more. Seems like a lot, but think of it this way. If you can get 5 people to contribute $10 each per week, it only takes 3 months to gather up $600. Everybody can come up with $10/week, just by cutting back on cigarettes or anarchist literature or whatever other vices they may go for.
●How can I reach more people?
multiple transmitters
Legend has it, there have been a couple of successful, profit-making Part 15 stations in the US. ... In Union County, New Jersey there is a network of sixteen synchronized transmitters on 1620 kHz forming a Spanish Christian "station." ...
●go to the audience
Another way to increase potential audience size is to locate your transmitter near a place.. .. A record company has succesfully used this method to promote new records in the northeast... ..
●have a web presence
You can potentially enlarge your audience by making your station's audio available on the world wide web.. .. But if you're trying to avoid legal troubles, be careful not to upload copyrighted music without permission or a license.
·●●● Are there any loopholes in rule 15.219 that I can exploit to increase the range of my signal?
If you want to remain 100% legal, don't consider loopholes.

@richardpowers That's a nostalgic visit to long ago. I didn't launch my part15 life until about 2007 and joined this Forum soon thereafter. We must have gotten old and cranky. But we're on the air reporting on how shaky these 'future' times are proving to be.
