Today I Had an Idea about my part 15 radio station, well today’s economy is bleak, when you not for profit non commercial station, economy is bad, jobs being cut, no donators for the station, things are getting tough nowadays, so I had an idea hit me, us part 15’ers are faced with this so here’s my concept. How about turning about our/your station to Commercial/Community Radio Hybrid. Advertise on our/your station while still having our part 15 community radio format. Now think about it, for a second. A hybrid I saw a thing on how to make a living on our part 15 radio community radio station from radio brandy. And I saw this very interesting. I use my station as a business and a hobby too. Us part 15’ers are considers community station that serves parts of our towns we live in, so I think that together as a hybrid, a neat creative idea with an innovative approach, with today’s obstacles as in (economy lack of money/donations etc), so think about it and tell me what you think.

Green Light
To ABMedia1 I give a great big green light to pursue the hybrid concept of part noncommercial and part commercial.
I have had a related idea in the back of my mind which I never came forward to explore, and my idea started when I read the condition given by one programmer that his program could be aired free only on a noncommercial basis. So I thought, all, right, we air his show noncommercially, but once it has run, the next hour could be commercial. Why not? His terms didn’t say the whole schedule had to be noncommercial, just the airing of his one show.
Now ABMedia1 has formally brought this idea for discussion, and my opinion is that it could be done.

And The 7th Angel Held Up The Fork Saying “It Is Done”
This has been done many times by Part 15 stations. I have done it as well and continue to do so on both the AM and FM stations. When its time for the local commercials to air, a second SAM program takes over the AM and FM audio buss and runs the scheduled commercials, then returns to the main SAM program and continues with the scheduled program.
As to the question about a program not wishing to be aired in a time slot with commercials..ie non-commercial, that only means for the duration of said program. The producer/host/author CANNOT dictate to you that your entire 24 hour day is exempt from airing commercials just for his 1 or 2 hour program. You can honor their request during their program’s duration, but after that its open season to whatever the heck you wish to do.
After all, the station belongs to you, not the programs or their creators. If they give stink that your airing commercials outside of their program, then you can advise them that your always accepting of air time fees to help cover the costs of running their programs on your station. DJ dues so to speak.
This is one area where you may find it very difficult to come to any sort of common ground between yourself and a non-commercial program. But it is not impossible to come to some sort of agreement both will work with.
Now the ironic thing is this. Most of these independent program authors and producers ask their audience for donations, or they sell compilations of articles or DVD’s or subscriptions to their material on their websites. Here is my take on this “double edged sword” syndrome.
Just because these non commercial programs do not have big time sponsorship or under control of corporate greed, they are still engaging in commercial activities by simply offering for sale DVD’s and books and subscriptions. They then mention about these offerings within their non commercial program to promote it (advertise) using your air time, your electricity and your equipment. Their audience goes to their website and actively purchases or subscribes (sales). The program producers/authors generate revenue from those offerings and subscriptions (income).
Now why the hell shouldn’t a Part 15 station not do the same things to support their operations?
Perhaps suggest to the program author that if they allow you to place links on your station’s website to their subscriptions or for sale DVD’s and books, that you get a percentage of the sale through your link off your website.
This should not be any big deal to the program author. If it is…well keep reading.
And if all else fails with the program author and no agreement can be reached, then its time to find another program to take its place, one that is not so Nazi and stingy.
